Dr Seuss’ Birthday Party
On March 1, 2002 over sixty pre-kindergarten children came to the Berne elementary school to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s 98th birthday with stories read aloud, crafts, singing and, of course, cake! The Cat in the Hat was on hand to preside. Dr. Seuss surely appreciated the many cards the children brought for him and we were all glad to see so much interest in joining the Thousand Books program. If you didn’t have a chance to join, remember its open whenever the school building is open. We would love every child to have one thousand books read to him or her before starting school! Thanks to all who helped make this a wonderful new event.

Book Case Dedication
On November 16, 2001 the Eileen Harsen Hitter “Passion for Literature” Memorial book case was unveiled. This book case holds a very special collection of children’s literature donated in Mrs. Hitter’s memory. It is now in its new home in the Berne Elementary Library where Eileen taught for ten years.
After welcoming comments and introductions by Principal LaBelle all classes, kindergarten through sixth grade were treated to a wonderful performance by the tap dancing and singing Nursery Rhyme, Fairy Tale and Mystery pop up books. Each Kindergarten class then gave a lively performance of their favorite nursery rhymes. Mr. Hitter thanked the gathering for all that the school community did for Mrs. Hitter and talked about keeping her spirit alive. Then the bookcase was unveiled and Mrs. Hitter’s children received many new book donations during a march of books to the stage. The Dancing Books wrapped up the celebration with their “ReadToUs.org” rendition.
All who took part were touched by the ceremony and the rapt attention of the students.

Books fall open,
You fall in,
delighted where
you’ve never been.
